What Is an AI Assistant?
By Karthick Selvam · Published · Updated
An AI assistant is an application, usually built on a large language model, that helps people with tasks through natural conversation.
What they do
Answer questions, draft and edit content, summarise documents, analyse data and help with code. Some can use tools like search, file access or company systems.
How they differ from chatbots of the past
Older chatbots followed scripted flows. LLM-based assistants handle open-ended requests, though they can make mistakes.
Using them at work
Set clear policies on which data may be shared, prefer business plans with suitable data terms, and teach people to verify outputs.
Getting value
Value comes from embedding the assistant into specific workflows, such as report drafting or ticket summarisation, rather than general use alone.
Frequently asked questions
Can assistants access company data?
Some can, through approved integrations. Access controls must be configured carefully.
