Generative AI vs Traditional AI: What Is the Difference?
By Karthick Selvam · Published
Traditional AI mostly predicts or classifies. Generative AI produces new content. Both have a place in the enterprise.
Traditional (predictive) AI
Models learn from labelled historical data to predict an outcome: will this customer churn, is this transaction fraudulent, what will demand be next week. Outputs are usually a number or a class.
Generative AI
Generative models, such as large language models and image generators, learn patterns in very large datasets and produce new text, code, images or audio in response to a prompt.
Key differences
Predictive models are typically smaller, trained on your own data and evaluated with clear metrics like accuracy. Generative models are usually pre-trained by a provider, adapted through prompting, retrieval or fine-tuning, and harder to evaluate because outputs are open-ended.
Which to use
Use predictive models for well-defined decisions with good historical data. Use generative AI for language-heavy tasks like summarisation, drafting, search and code assistance. Many solutions combine both.
Frequently asked questions
Is generative AI replacing traditional machine learning?
No. Forecasting, scoring and classification are still usually best served by conventional models.
