LangChain Explained
By Karthick Selvam · Published · Updated
LangChain is an open-source framework for building applications on top of large language models.
What it provides
Standard interfaces for models, prompt templates, document loaders, text splitters, vector store integrations, retrievers and tool calling, so developers can swap components without rewriting the application.
Typical uses
Retrieval-augmented question answering, chatbots with memory, document processing pipelines and simple agents.
Why developers use it
It speeds up prototyping and provides many ready-made integrations. Its companion tools add tracing and evaluation.
Things to watch
Abstractions can hide what is sent to the model, and the API has evolved quickly. Teams should understand the underlying model calls and pin versions.
Frequently asked questions
Is LangChain required to build LLM apps?
No. Many apps call model APIs directly; frameworks are a convenience.
