Serverless vs Containers
By Karthick Selvam · Published
Two popular ways to run applications in the cloud, with different trade-offs.
Serverless
Functions (such as AWS Lambda, Azure Functions, Google Cloud Functions) or managed services run code on demand. No servers to manage, automatic scaling and pay per use, but with limits on runtime, cold starts and less control.
Containers
Applications packaged with their dependencies (Docker) and run on platforms like Kubernetes or managed container services. More control and portability, but more operational work.
When to use which
Serverless suits event-driven and spiky workloads. Containers suit long-running services, complex dependencies and portability needs.
The middle ground
Serverless container services, such as AWS Fargate or Google Cloud Run, run containers without managing servers.
Frequently asked questions
